R & D

How does the work you personally do directly impact patients?

I have a position that gives me a lot of opportunity for the design choices that we make. We directly impact the device performance and its ability to help improve patients' lives. It helps to look at the big picture and realize the little details that may seem mundane at times are actually being used to design a device that will be implanted into someone's head.

How does knowing you're improving people's lives affect what you do?

It makes you feel a little better at the end of a long day when you have a big project, it adds more meaning. You know that you're working toward a goal that has a big effect on people's lives.

What specific elements of your work are you particularly proud of?

I'm proud of the dedication that we all show to design good devices. I'm proud of the application and how hard we work for these devices to come out. It's gratifying to see the end result.

What are some of the great technologies you get to work with on a day-to-day basis?

I'm working on the stent project right now. I get a fair amount of contact with our solitaire staff. It's an innovative device that is fully retrievable. It's an attribute you don't see in neurovascular. We use standing electron microscopes to advanced pumps that simulate blood flow to an x-ray box and to a little portable x-ray box.

Are you working on anything that you can talk about right now that is very encouraging to you as an employee and to the potential people it is going to help?

I am working on the stent project and those are used for a number of techniques that treat or prevent strokes. It's a really dramatic time to be in this field since things are changing so fast now. People who wouldn't have lived through a stroke a few years ago now have treatments that were not available. You can save people's lives that would've otherwise had no chance.

What motivates you at ev3?

The people first and foremost. We have a great group of hardworking, smart, fun people. Secondly, this is something that clearly does make a difference in people's lives and it's nice to be on the cutting edge of research in this field.
