How does the work you personally do directly impact patients?
When I was in a lab in North Carolina there was a baby who came in who was about 8 or 10 months old. She had this issue and needed to get surgery and there was an endovascular treatment option. When they brought her in and put her on the table, I realized they were using my product. If she didn't have help she'd only have a 15 percent survival rate, and if she did get help it was still only 20 percent. It was lose/lose and high risk.So I stepped out of the lab to go down the hall and at one point I walked past the waiting room. Her parents were just staring at the wall, not blinking. Then I saw the color come back in their faces and I saw the tears in their eyes, and then it really hit me. The procedure worked and the baby did very well. There were no complications and a full recovery was expected.
How does knowing you're improving people’s lives affect what you do?
Why do I work as hard as I do in this business? Because I can help save lives. There's nothing like it and you can't get more motivated than that. It goes beyond salary and a 401k. You have to ask yourself what motivates you; knowing that a baby is going home healthy, or an extra $5,000 in your salary? What specific elements of your work are you particularly proud of?
I love this job. I have more freedom here than in any other company that I've worked for. I really enjoy the freedom to take the initiative, have it approved and make it happen. Creating products that help save lives has a great impact on me. When you go out and see it in the lab, you come back energized. It's a motivator. What else motivates you at ev3?
There's just something about the people at ev3. They are very sincere. I'm not sure how they do it, but the people are the most sincere, upfront, honest people I've been able to work with. Every one of us is focused on making a difference. When you get a job at ev3, you will be cranking - you'll have more assignments that mean something, that are critical. You can have a vision of what you want to be and make it happen. You can't beat that combination. A lot of companies say: "we make a difference in people’s lives." But we're still small enough to react and big enough to make a difference.
